On the Road – Off the Grid

For Grandcali, a passionate vanlife blogger and influencer, power is more than just convenience when traveling – it is essential.

This is particularly relevant as Martin uses a CPAP machine overnight to address his sleep apnea. A few years ago, he was still using a portable power station. Today, he relies on a holistic system in his Grand California, which has been completed by the EFOY Pro 2800 Fuel Cell.

The Challenge: High energy demand in the van

The high continuous load from the heater, refrigerator, phone charging, lighting, and cooking on the induction hob creates a significant energy demand in the van. An energy system consisting of two 150 Ah lithium batteries, a solar panel, and an additional battery module was insufficient to meet this demand and was depleted in practice after just 2-3 days. For this reason, Martin was looking for a reliable and long-lasting power supply.

The solution: Generate your own energy on the go with the EFOY Pro

“Reliable power supply even at sub-zero temperatures”

If we are standing somewhere by a beautiful lake or in the forest in Sweden, the power supply quickly becomes difficult. We can’t generate the energy we need with our solar panels alone, and certainly not when the weather isn’t playing along. **Since installing the EFOY Pro 2800, we are truly independent – even in the Swedish winter at -30 °C.

How the fuel cell works

EFOY Fuel Cells are based on DMFC (Direct Methanol Fuel Cell) technology. They convert chemical energy into electrical energy without interim stages and without much loss of efficiency. The methanol in the fuel cartridge is supplemented by oxygen from the air, and is used to produce electricity.

The EFOY Pro 2800 reliably closes the gap:

With a continuous output of 110 watts, it generates up to 220 Ah per day – independently of the weather and quietly. This means that cooking on the induction hob** is also taken care of and additional consumers are no longer a worry.

Installation in the van: Space-saving and efficient

The fuel cell was installed in the rear garage of the camper – next to the batteries and inverter. The waste heat can escape through existing openings and the water vapor is dissipated via the forced ventilation. Additional ventilation is planned for the summer.
